Low Carb Tortillas

Low Carb Tortillas

Store bought tortillas tend to have way too many carbs (13g- 26g per tortilla) and ingredients that tend to not be Keto friendly (wheat starch, wheat flour, corn masa flour). Even the advertised “low carb” brands such as “Mission Carb Balance” are made with wheat starch, enriched bleached flour and wheat gluten. They run at 13g carbs per tortilla.  It can be difficult to find something to use that’s both easy and tastes good.

So I decided to make my own. The recipe is really easy with only 4 ingredients if you include the baking powder and salt. And only have 2.5g per tortilla. Made with almond flour and egg whites its really simple with basic ingredients. No unhealthy oils or flours. This recipe holds together really well so your topping aren’t falling through the holes. No more feeling deprived without tortillas or having to settle for another taco salad!

Versatile in so many ways. You can make this recipe for ALMOND FLOUR TORTILLAS sweet, savory or neutral.

To make it SWEET add 1 tsp vanilla, sweetener of your choice (Monkfruit, Swerve or Stevia Glycerite) and 1/4 tsp cinnamon. This comes out similar to a traditional crepe pancake.

To make SAVORY add 1/4 tsp garlic powder and 1/4 tsp chili powder.

To make NEUTRAL only add salt as my recipe for Almond Flour Tortillas calls for.

Topping Ideas

  • cream cheese mixed with a little sweetener, vanilla and some cinnamon
  • peanut butter (or other nut butter and a low fruit spread such as Walden Farms Brand.
  • berries and whipped cream
  • quesadillas
  • breakfast burritos
  • shredded chicken
  • carnitas
  • taquito toppings
  • ground beef, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, salsa, sour cream and guacamole
  • steak
  • fish tacos
  • tuna, chicken or egg salad

Another great option if you’re crunched for time are the almond flour tortillas by the brand “SIETE” at 10g per tortilla these are made with almond flour, tapioca flour, water, sea salt and xanthan gum. The family created these products initially to help them to combat multiple autoimmune conditions of their own. They adopted a grain free low inflammation diet and still wanted the option to set the tacos and fajitas their family was used to.

They also offer tortillas made with cassava and coconut flour at 12g carbs per tortilla. Ingredients include cassava flour, water, coconut flour, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, sea salt and xanthan gum.

They also offer low carb tortilla chips! Although beware they taste really good and the carbs can add up fast so I don’t recommend these when you’re actively looking to stay aggressively low carb for weight loss. But a great option if you can handle only eating a few! They have 19g of carbs per 9 chips. Nacho, lime and sea salt flavors. All tortillas and tortilla chips can also be found for purchase at Sprouts grocery store.
