Carbs vs Net Carbs

Carbs vs Net Carbs

This can be a really confusing topic, especially for those who are just starting keto. The definition of net carbs is the total carbs minus the fiber and/or sugar alcohols. These are thought to have a minimal impact on blood sugar levels so they are subtracted from the total. Realistically I see this more of a marketing scam. Many new products out there advertise low amounts of net carbs when the nutritional label will actually show a much higher total carb number. I choose not to follow the net carbs, I think this can become very confusing and can easily put you out of your target carbohydrate range.

If you are choosing to follow net carbs you can set your goal for 20-25 grams of net carbs or approximately 50 grams of total carbs as recommended by Dr Steve Phinney and Dr Jeff Volek. So depending on which you find easier to follow this should still keep you within your range.

Calculating your macros in order to determine how many carbs you should have, here is a link to a calculator I found easy to use.
